Bridge Mode: What It Is & Why Gamers Need It

April 2, 2026·8 min read

## What is Double NAT?

When you plug your own router into an ISP's modem-router combo (like an Xfinity XB7 or AT&T BGW320), you now have TWO devices doing Network Address Translation. Your gaming device is behind two firewalls, two NAT tables, and often sees "NAT Type: Strict" which causes connection issues.

## What Bridge Mode Does

Bridge Mode turns off the ISP gateway's Wi-Fi and routing functions. It becomes a "dumb modem" that simply passes the internet signal through to your router. Your router handles everything.

## How to Enable Bridge Mode on Xfinity XB7/XB8

1. Open a browser and go to 10.0.0.1

2. Log in (default: admin / password)

3. Go to Gateway > At a Glance

4. Under "Advanced Settings," enable Bridge Mode

5. Your XB7's Wi-Fi will turn off — now connect your own router to the XB7's LAN port

## The Ping Improvement

I've tested this in homes across Nashville. Gamers typically see a 10-20ms reduction in ping after enabling Bridge Mode — because traffic no longer makes two NAT translation hops. For competitive games like Warzone or Valorant, this matters.
